Additio Prosthetic Tool System

For many upper-limb amputees, cable-operated split-hook limbs are the only accessible prosthetic option. One of the drawbacks of this prosthesis is its inability to firmly grip small objects. The Additio project proposes a solution for this quality of life issue: an adapter which attaches to a user’s hook and then connects to a variety of tools, eliminating the need for the user to exert any grip. Rare earth magnets with a holding force greater than 7 kgs act as connectors between the hook adapter and the tools. Additio was developed through interviews and testing sessions with a quadruple amputee, occupational therapists and a prosthetist.
